Seven Signs Your AC Tune-Up is Due

• Strange sounds coming from the AC - Most of us get accustomed to the sounds around our home. If you notice your AC making new or out-of-the- ordinary sounds, this is an indication your AC is due for a tune-up. Some common sounds that indicate something is wrong include a buzz, hissing, whistle or banging can all be a signal of a looming breakdown.
• Increase in your utility bills - If you notice an increase in your utility bill, it could be an indication that your air conditioner is drawing more energy than normal. This usually happens due to a lack of maintenance. If you are not on a regular maintenance schedule then over time dust becomes trapped in the cooling coil and indoor blower causing a decrease in the efficiency of your system.
• AC is not cooling properly - There are a number of reasons why your air conditioning system would not be cooling properly: dirty filter, dirty coils, low on refrigerant (Freon) or a clogged condensation drain line can all contribute to poor system performance.
• AC is giving off a bad odor - If you are noticing a bad odor in your home and suspect it is being emitted from your air conditioning system, you will want to have your system inspected as soon as possible. The smell can be of a number of factors such as a clogged drain, wet filter, mold or fungus buildup or a trapped and decaying animals in your system. Having regular AC tune-ups ensure that your system is clean and well maintained avoiding any reason for a bad odor to be released.
• The air conditioner has weak air flow - Poor air flow can be an indication of a clogged air filter, leaky air ducts or both. A clogged or dirty air filter prevents an easy flow of air through the system causing the system to run longer, cause air handler sweat and promotes conditions for mold and fungus to grow in the system and ducts. An AC tune-up is essential for preventing costly breakdowns and to avoid unnecessary health risks for you and your family.
• AC is unable to control humidity levels - Under normal conditions your AC system automatically dehumidifies your home. However, if your home's humidity level feels high and leaving you feeling sticky, it may be time to have a tune-up on your system. High humidity conditions in your home can lead to mold and mildew issues and leave you feeling less than comfortable.
• Water is leaking from your AC - Water leaks are usually due to a clogged drain pipe or in some cases a leak in the refrigerant. As your system cools the air, it removes excess humidity in the form of condensation and this condensation is safely piped to the exterior of your home. Over time this condensation in the units drain pan and drain pipe will start to grow algae. This algae, if left untreated, will eventually lead to a clogged drain and possible damage to the air conditioning system.
